What are some of your favorite ways to prepare tofu? I really love tofu as it’s such a versatile ingredient can be used in a variety of ingredients. It easily absorbs flavor and can be tossed in a simple sauce for a quick delicious meal.

Tofu is a cholesterol-free, low-calorie, high-protein food that’s also rich in bone-boosting calcium and manganese. Tofu may help you to lose weight by keeping you fuller for longer on fewer calories than meat. It may reduce the risk of heart disease, especially when swapped for saturated fat-heavy animal proteins.

What kind and type of Tofu should I use?

You can find raw tofu in the refrigerated section at your grocery store. It’s also available pre-baked and seasoned. Here’s a look at the several different types available.

  • Soft tofu Soft tofu is the Chinese-style equivalent of silken tofu. It is slightly less smooth but can be used in the same way as silken tofu.
  • Medium tofu This tofu is denser than silken and soft but still fairly delicate. It can work well in gently simmered miso soup and served cold like hiya yakko. Depending on the brand, it may be interchangeable with firm tofu.
  • Silken Tofu If you’re using silken tofu, you’ll likely blend it into a dessert or smoothie to replace yogurt, or into a soup as a replacement for cream.
  • Firm If you’re using tofu in lieu of ground meat or eggs, break it into small pieces. Toss it in a skillet with spices and cook for three minutes, salting to taste at the end.
  • Extra-Firm it is ideal when cut into cubes, slices, or strips. It may feel firm, but it’s still saturated in the liquid from the package. If you want crispier tofu, you need to fit in more prep time to press out the excess liquid. First, remove the tofu from the package and drain the excess water, wrap it in a clean kitchen towel, and set it on a plate. Put something heavy (like a pan) on top of the wrapped tofu. Wait a couple of minutes, then remove the tofu from the towel and pat it dry with another towel.
  • Prebaked the hard work is already done for you with this tofu option. Prebaked tofu or already prepared tofu can be easily added into many recipes in lieu of meat protein.
  • Regular Tofu it is pressed and has a somewhat spongy texture, and comes in several varieties distinguished by how much water is pressed out.
