This is one of my favorite appetizer, This blooming onion is a copycat recipe and i can say this is one of the best! it is tender and sweet on the inside and golden crispy on the outside. Perfect appetizer with the dipping sauce. this incredible appetizer is actually easy to make at home.

What kind of Onion to use for Blooming Onion?

Choose the largest white, yellow onions including Walla Walla, Vidalia and Maui sweets. The reason sweet onions taste so sweet is the have less sulfur and thus less pungency than other onions.

How do you cut an onion for Blooming Onion?

  • Slice 1 inch off of the top of the onion and remove the papery skin.
  • Flip the onion cut side down. Begin slicing about 1/2 inch away from the root. slice the onion several times down the center to create petals. Keep slicing the sections in half until the onion cut 16 times, or if you want a hassle free you can buy a Blooming onion cutter. This allows you to core out the center perfectly even though it isn’t necessary.
  • . The onion should be look like this after slicing.
  •  Cut 1 inch diameter core out of the middle of the onion.
  • Soak the onion into the ice cold water for 30 minutes.

Why do you Soak Blooming Onion in Water?

Soaking onion in cold water to let the petals bloom and separate on their own instead of forcing it. The soaking is necessary to allow the petals to get larger and stronger.

What is in the batter for blooming onion?

Using a large bowl enough to hold the onion seasoned all purpose flour with salt, black pepper, paprika, thyme and oregano and in another large bowl, whisk together egg and milk.

Blooming Onion Sauce

This dipping sauce you can make it from scratch or you can buy it at any grocery store. If you want to make from scratch just combine mayonnaise , catsup, black pepper, paprika, dried oregano, cayenne pepper and thyme. Stir until well combined. Cover and chill until ready to use.

Instructions

  1. Start by cutting the onion .Cut a small flat spot on the non-root end of the onion. Remove and peel the papery skin of the onion.

  2. Place the onion cut side down on a cutting board. using a sharp knife begin slicing about 1/2 inch away from the root. slice the onion several times down the center to create petals. Keep slicing the sections in half until the onion cut 16 times.

  3. Place the onion cut side down in a bowl of ice water, soak at least 30 minutes.

  4. In a large bowl, whisk together milk and egg. Dip the onion in the bowl of milk mixture. 

  5. Dredge onion with the flour mixture. using your hands, coat the onion with flour. separate the petals and sprinkle the dry coating between them.

  6. Dip it back to the wet mixture, double coat to make it crisp when frying. Tap off excess flour.

  7. Heat oil in a using a deep pan . You will need just enough oil to cover the onion. Fry the onions root side down for 7-9 minutes until golden brown and crispy.

  8. Using a wire skimmer, remove onion and drain in paper towel.

  9. Serve hot with dipping sauce.

Note

  • These fried onions are best served promptly while they are warm and crisp.

  • The sauce can be made one day in advance or you can buy a store bought dipping sauce.

  • If you have available blooming onion cutter, use it for a hassle free cutting.
